Dysgnathia
Dysgnathia operations
Dysgnathia is a collective term for all malformations of the position of teeth, the jaws and the masculatory system. Treatments for the jaws and teeth alter the aesthetics of the face and require complex physiognomic interrelations to be taken into account. Prof. Sailer has a unique competence in this area and decades of experience. The transition from surgical intervention due to reasons of visual aesthetics to a medical necessity in the case of dysgnathia is sometimes seamless. Thus, for instance, a receding chin and a lower jaw that is too small can not only have a negative impact on the appearance, but also on the health, because this could lead to snoring, sleep apnoea, disturbed masticatory function etc.
Dysgnathias cannot be treated with orthodontic braces
Millions of children and youngsters wear orthodontic braces, so that they can display a flawless set of teeth later when they smile. Orthodontic braces and headgear force crooked teeth gently and gradually over a period of months and years into the desired position. Sometimes, teeth are even extracted to make enough room for the remaining teeth. However, if there are any skeletal malformations or dysgnathia, such as a lower jaw that is too small or a receding upper jaw, the treatment should be planned along with an orthodontist and a facial expert, such as a maxillo-facial surgeon, and the house dentist. Because disruptions in the growth of the jaws fall under the domain of a facial surgeon and malformations in the positioning of teeth come under the domain of an orthodontist. Only common planning and treatment can lead to a nice positioning of teeth as well as an attractive appearance.
Complications after dysgnathia operations
Every year Prof. Sailer receives patients with complications, who have already undergone one or more operations for dysgnathia. In most cases, these involve aesthetically unacceptable wrong positioning of the jaws, e. g. the face may be too long or to short, or asymmetric due to changes in the positioning of the teeth. These patients can be helped quickly and successfully, thanks to the unique competence of Prof. Sailer.
