Cleft lip and palate
14 year old boy with an extremely wide cleft palate and lip on the left that had never been operated upon.
Prof. Sailer developed a new surgical method and reconstructed the lip, the palate, the jaw position and the nose in one operation.
The boy got a job at a hotel.
“It is my vision to use my surgery to turn patients with congenital anomalies not just into normal looking people, but into particularly attractive human beings.” (Prof. Sailer)
We perform primary cleft palate and lip operations as per the Zurich Protocol, which has been tested for decades and gives the best results in terms of growth and speech.
Where secondary cleft palate and lip surgery is concerned, i. e. surgery on grown up patients, we see patients from all over the world with various growth defects of the upper jaw, which usually necessitate highly individualised treatment concepts. Based on our decades of experience in this area at our former centre at the University of Zurich and in our cleft centres in India, where we and doctors trained by us have already operated on more than 25,000 malformed patients, we have the necessary competence for providing treatment in the aesthetic and speech domains.
Prof. Sailer met his former patients again after 5 years.
-
Before: Typical result of a growth malformation in the cleft lip and palate (CLP) after several operations alio loco.

-
Before: The stigma of a CLP (cleft lip and palate) is clear, since the upper jaw has not grown forward, the scars are visible, the upper lip lies behind the lower lip and the nose is deformed.
-
After: The stigma of a cleft patient has been eliminated.
-
Before: Typical appearance of cleft palate and lip after several operations (performed elsewhere).
-
After: Result after 3 operations within six months, the stigma of the cleft patient has vanished.
-
Before: Severe recession of the upper jaw as well as asymmetric upper lip and nose.
-
