Tongue changes

The tongue can exhibit the same changes as the other mucous membranes in the oral cavity and in the genitals. When operating on the tongue it is important to bear all its functions in mind.

There are numerous operation techniques available

When operating on the tongue it is important to bear all its functions in mind: flexibility, sensation, sense of taste, swallowing and speaking. Depending on the circumstances, the tongue can be significantly enlarged (macroglossia) so that speaking is disrupted, the teeth are pushed out of place by continual pressure and – particularly dangerous – an obstructive sleep apnoea can develop although the lower jaw is normal in size and does not recede. A tongue reduction can be necessary in this situation. There are numerous operation techniques available which do not cause  functional disorders.
