Cysts
Cysts are hollow spaces filled with liquid inside bones or in the soft tissues. The various kinds of cysts are diagnosed histologically with the help of the surrounding cyst membrane, or the so-called wall of the cyst. Cysts expand slowly and destroy the bones and cause the teeth to get loose.
Special characteristics of cysts in the jaw region
In the region of the jaw, one special kind are cysts that start from the teeth and dental germs. Mention must also be made here of cystic tumours which always require a removal with a safety margin, otherwise there could be relapses, i. e. the tumour can grow back again. The treatment of benign cysts depends on the diagnosis and the size of the cysts. Small cysts can be removed on the whole, large cysts are usually opened up (cystostomy or marsupialisation), so that the internal pressure disappears. After that the cysts are reduced in size and can be removed again after a few months. The bone defect must be filled with the patient's own bone or lyophilised cartilage (lyo-cartilage).
