Chin Correction - Genioplasty
The chin plays a crucial and identity-defining role in facial aesthetics. The shape of the chin has a significant impact on social interactions. A receding chin, a double chin, or other chin deformities can lead to negative perceptions and reduced sympathy from others.
A receding or protruding chin is usually highly distressing for those affected. While a distinct chin shape does not necessarily have to be considered a flaw, it can make the face appear unbalanced, significantly impacting self-confidence.
The chin surgery helps improve self-confidence.
The chin significantly influences the shape and contour of the face. With a cosmetic chin surgery, a chin correction, the appearance can be positively transformed. Studies have already shown that the appearance of the chin is not only very important for women but also for men. While a shapely, prominent chin is particularly attractive for women, it is a symbol of assertiveness and attractiveness for men.
The most commonly performed procedure is the correction of a receding chin. Another frequent procedure is the correction of a double chin. Many women are bothered by overly pronounced jaw angles or a chin that is too dominant. This makes the face appear very wide and flat. This issue can be resolved with a chin correction, as the facial features appear more feminine and softer after the procedure.
In a chin surgery or chin correction, the shape of the chin is gently adjusted. This reshapes the face in an aesthetic manner, creating well-proportioned contours. However, aesthetic chin surgery is not only for patients suffering from a receding chin or an overly pronounced chin. This procedure also helps eliminate an unwanted double chin.
Depending on the needs and findings, a chin correction may involve an osteotomy, where the entire chin bone is moved forward to achieve enlargement. We deliberately avoid using implants, as they often lead to inflammation.

The most frequently asked questions
How long does a chin correction take?
The chin correction usually takes 60 to 90 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis under anesthesia.
How long is the recovery time after a chin correction?
Most patients can resume their usual activities after one to two days. However, strenuous activities and sports should be avoided for about two weeks.
Are there visible scars after a chin correction?
In chin correction, the approach is usually made from inside the oral cavity, leaving no externally visible scars.
What methods are used for a chin correction?
Depending on the needs and findings, the chin can be corrected through enlargement or reduction. For enlargement, the chin bone is moved forward, or the patient’s own tissue is used. For reduction, the lower jawbone is shortened or shaved down.
Can a double chin also be treated?
Yes, a double chin can be removed through a minor procedure, often in the form of liposuction or tightening of the chin area.
What should be considered before a chin correction?
Before the procedure, excessive nicotine or alcohol consumption should be avoided. Blood-thinning medications must be disclosed during the preliminary consultation. Precise planning and examination, including 3D imaging, are necessary to achieve the best results.
Process of a Chin Correction
If you are unhappy with your appearance or your chin, the professionally competent team at SailerClinic is happy to provide a consultation. In the first step, the chin correction is discussed in a personal conversation, and the necessary examinations are carried out. The upcoming procedure is explained step by step.
Before the Chin Correction
A chin correction is generally a straightforward and uncomplicated procedure. However, it requires extremely precise planning. Before the procedure, an examination is essential, during which, in addition to 2D X-rays—known as lateral cephalograms—the exact shape and size of the chin are captured and planned using tracing techniques. Additionally, a 3D camera is used to analyze and discuss the shape and dimensions of the chin together, and to simulate potential postoperative results.
During a personal consultation, the treatment method and process are explained in detail. This preliminary discussion helps reduce risks associated with pre-existing or current conditions, as certain conditions may make general anesthesia impossible. In such cases, alternative solutions can be discussed.
Before the planned chin surgery, every patient receives specific behavior tips to ensure a smooth procedure. In any case, excessive consumption of nicotine or alcohol should be avoided. If blood-thinning medications are being taken, this must be disclosed during the consultation.

The Chin Surgery
The chin surgery typically takes between 60 and 120 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis under anesthesia. Depending on the planned procedure and surgical techniques used, general anesthesia may be required.
For chin augmentation, either the patient’s own tissue or artificial material is used. The approach is exclusively from inside the oral cavity, with no external incision. For chin advancement, we generally use only the patient’s own tissue. If additional material is needed, we use lyophilized cartilage.
Chin Augmentation and Chin Reduction
In chin augmentation, the incision is made intraorally, leaving no externally visible scars. The lower part of the chin is detached and secured in a new position using screws. In some cases, other treatments may be considered for chin augmentation. For example, a rotational advancement procedure may be performed, where not only the chin but the entire jaw along with the chin is moved forward.
Chin reduction, on the other hand, involves a procedure in which the chin is either moved backward or shaved down. To reduce the chin, the lower jawbone is shortened and then fixed with screws. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the necessary incisions are made near the ears or under the chin. Due to the aesthetic significance of the chin, chin reduction is a relatively rare procedure.
Chin Correction - Genioplasty (without Chin Implant)
A double chin, a drooping chin, or a receding chin can be treated in an outpatient procedure. Our patients often experience a positive change shortly afterward: increased self-esteem is often accompanied by an overall improved posture, a more confident demeanor, and a positive aura.
Correction of Double Chin and Drooping Chin
To remove a double chin, a minor procedure is performed to tighten the chin area during a double chin surgery. For some patients, a small procedure such as double chin liposuction is necessary. In the case of a drooping chin, the soft tissues of the chin hang down. Causes include relaxation of the mentalis muscle (chin muscle), loss of the anterior mandibular ridge, or detachment of the mentalis muscle due to the placement of an artificial chin implant. Double chin removal in Switzerland is performed on both women and men.
Receding Chin
A receding chin typically has various causes. It can result from genetic predisposition or an overbite. Another cause of a receding chin may be a shortened lower jaw. Surgery for a receding chin is performed after identifying the cause and establishing a plan for the procedure. The cost of surgery for a receding chin depends on the chosen treatment.
Recovery and Healing After Chin Correction
After chin correction, the recovery time is generally short and straightforward. Most patients can resume their usual activities after one to two days. However, strenuous activities and sports should be avoided for about two weeks. Mild swelling and bruising are normal and subside within the first few days. The final results are visible after a few weeks once healing is complete.
